National anthem

Lyrics of the Old Nigeria National Anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee”

In a move that has sparked debate across the nation, the Nigerian Senate passed the National Anthem Bill 2024.

This legislation proposes a return to the country’s original anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” replacing the current national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.”

The bill, championed by Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere, passed despite opposition and has been approved by President Bola Tinubu

While the reasons behind the shift remain undisclosed, the move has reignited a sense of nostalgia for the anthem that served as a cornerstone of Nigerian identity during its early years of independence.

Here are the lyrics to the soon-to-be-reinstated national anthem, “Nigeria We Hail Thee”:

Nigeria we hail thee,

Our own dear native land,

Though tribe and tongue may differ,

In brotherhood, we stand,

Nigerians all, and proud to serve,

Our sovereign Motherland.

———————————

Our flag shall be a symbol

That truth and justice reign,

In peace or battle honour’d,

And this we count as gain,

To hand on to our children

A banner without stain.

———————————

O God of all creation,

Grant this our one request,

Help us to build a nation

Where no man is oppressed,

And so with peace and plenty

Nigeria may be blessed.
